    About the role#

    The American Cancer Society is seeking a Research Intern to join the Cancer Risk Prediction team for the Fall 2026 term. This role offers the opportunity to work under the mentorship of senior-level scientists on projects involving cancer risk prediction and health disparities. This internship can fulfill practicum or thesis requirements for students in statistics, public health, or biomedical sciences.

    What you'll do#

    • Prepare and analyze data to address questions regarding cancer risk prediction, including risk factor associations and incidence rates across diverse populations.
    • Write, test, and submit computer programs using R.
    • Conduct literature reviews and assist in the development of research proposals.
    • Draft scientific manuscripts and contribute to research writing.
    • Create tables and figures for scientific presentations using Excel or PowerPoint.
    • Manage potential opportunities to lead or co-lead a research project for thesis work.

    What you'll need#

    • Experience with data analysis.
    • Proficiency in R programming within a public health research environment.
    • Ability to manage multiple tasks simultaneously.
    • Strong organizational, interpersonal, and communication skills.
    • Preference is given to candidates pursuing an MPH, MS, or PhD in biostatistics, statistics, or quantitative epidemiology.
    • Experience with SEER*Stat or cancer epidemiological research is a plus.

    Location & details#

    • This is a paid internship.
    • The role is part-time, up to 20 hours per week, starting in September 2026.
    • Work can be performed remotely or at an American Cancer Society office, to be determined.
    • Sponsorship for this position is not available.
