About the role#
The Electrical Design Engineering Intern works with our electrical team to move aerospace hardware from concept toward flight qualification. You will own a scoped electrical design project, supported by a dedicated mentor and direct access to the build and test engineers who bring your work to life. This is a hands-on program where interns design, build, and debug actual hardware. You should expect your schematics and boards to be reviewed with the same rigor as a full-time engineer, and you will have hardware on the bench before your internship ends.
What you'll do#
- Design electronics from concept to functional prototype, including hardware selection, PCB design, and system-level integration.
- Support electrical design for flight hardware, including schematic capture, electrical analysis, component selection, and PCBA layout.
- Build early hardware and iterate based on results.
- Run bench testing and functional development tests on the hardware you build.
- Debug failures to the root cause and update designs accordingly.
- Troubleshoot system-level issues using lab equipment like oscilloscopes and digital multimeters.
- Select components while considering de-rating, tolerance, and availability.
- Collaborate with electrical, mechanical, software, and test engineers to deliver functional products.
- Help test engineering define and execute functional, environmental, and EMI test plans.
- Incorporate manufacturability and testability feedback from build engineers into your systems.
- Evaluate existing designs for improvements in reliability and cost.
- Manage involvement in multiple projects at various stages.
- Present your project and results to the engineering team at the conclusion of the internship.
What you'll need#
- Enrollment in a Bachelor's, Master's, or PhD program in electrical engineering, computer engineering, engineering physics, or a related field.
- Must be returning to school in Fall 2027 or graduating in Spring 2027 with interest in a full-time role.
- Must be returning to school at the end of the internship to continue studies for at least one quarter or semester.
- Completed coursework in circuits, electronics, or signals, with a working understanding of first principles in power, filtering, and logic.
- Hands-on electrical design experience from coursework, student project teams, personal projects, or prior internships.
- Familiarity with test equipment such as oscilloscopes, multimeters, logic analyzers, debuggers, current probes, and test automation.
- Experience with Altium Designer or equivalent electronic design automation tools.
- Experience with circuit simulation, component selection, and de-rating.
- Experience on a student project team building electronics for physical hardware like rocketry, Formula SAE, CubeSat, or robotics.
- Familiarity with DO-160, MIL-STD-810, or other qualification and certification frameworks.
- Ability to use engineering first principles to challenge and simplify requirements.
- Status as a U.S. person as defined by ITAR.
Location & details#
- This is a full-time, 10-week, on-site internship based in El Segundo, California.
- The program runs during Winter and Spring 2027, starting in January.
- Occasional travel to vendors or other sites may be required.
