About the role#
The Policy Fellow is an early-career position built to develop the next generation of civil rights advocates. You will support the Political Advocacy team through research, writing, and event planning. Over time, you will develop subject matter expertise and lead policy reform campaigns that align with the mission of the ACLU-NJ.
What you'll do#
- Conduct research and draft memos to support advocacy campaigns.
- Review new legislation to assess its impact on civil liberties.
- Help draft legislation and participate in campaign strategy planning.
- Build and maintain relationships with legislators, staff, coalition partners, and community stakeholders.
- Schedule and attend meetings with legislative offices.
- Create advocacy materials like fact sheets, one-pagers, and talking points.
- Write and present oral testimony.
- Provide logistical support for lobby days, rallies, and speaking events.
- Manage administrative tools including contact lists, vote trackers, and email listservs.
What you'll need#
- A bachelor’s degree in political science, public policy, sociology, legal studies, or a related field. A master’s degree is preferred.
- Recent graduates within two years of degree completion are encouraged to apply.
- Professional or applied experience in policy, legislative affairs, or advocacy. Relevant internships, clinics, or volunteer work are also considered.
- Strong research skills and the ability to turn complex information into clear, accessible memos.
- Excellent written and oral communication skills.
- Familiarity with the legislative process, ideally at the state level.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office and Google Workspace.
- A demonstrated commitment to civil liberties, social justice, and equity.
- Ability to work collaboratively across teams and engage with diverse communities.
- Preferred skills include familiarity with New Jersey state politics, community organizing experience, bilingual proficiency, and experience with legislative tracking or CRM tools.
Location & details#
- This is a full-time, on-site position based in Newark, New Jersey.
- This is a paid fellowship with a starting salary of $65,000.
- Hiring is conducted on a rolling basis.
