About the role#
Abbott is looking for interns to join the Cancer Diagnostics Division for the Summer 2027 term. This program provides hands-on experience for students interested in product development, bioinformatics, or machine learning. You will work on projects that support our goal of improving how cancer is detected and managed.
What you'll do#
- Contribute to product development, design, and prototyping.
- Conduct lab-based experimentation, testing, and scientific analysis.
- Provide cross-functional support throughout the product lifecycle.
- Engage in bioinformatics, computational biology, and large-scale biological dataset analysis.
- Perform statistical modeling, algorithm development, and validation.
- Develop machine learning models and apply predictive analytics to research.
What you'll need#
- Completion of at least one year of college coursework and a plan to return to school after the internship.
- Authorization to work in the United States without sponsorship.
- A minimum GPA of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale.
- Ability to be geographically mobile for the duration of the internship.
- Product Development candidates: Pursuing a bachelor's or master's degree in Biomedical Engineering, Chemistry, or Life Sciences with prior lab experience.
- Bioinformatics candidates: Pursuing a PhD in Mathematics, Computer Science, Physics, or related quantitative fields.
- ML & AI candidates: Pursuing a master's degree or PhD in AI, Computer Science, or Data Science.
- Familiarity with protein immunoassays, ELISA, PCR/qPCR, or NGS workflows is preferred.
- Experience with automated liquid-handling systems or biological sample processing is a plus.

- This is a full-time, paid, on-site internship.
- Positions are located in La Jolla, California, or Madison, Wisconsin.
