Engineering Internships: 2027 Guide Across Disciplines
Engineering internships span mechanical, electrical, civil, chemical, computer, industrial, aerospace, and biomedical fields. See live open counts and where to apply.

Engineering internships on Intern Insider are spread across many majors, not one shortlist of famous employers. The mechanical engineering field page lists 7,482 open internships from 1,777 companies, the electrical engineering field page lists 7,125 from 1,639, the civil engineering field page lists 5,040 from 964, and the chemical engineering field page lists 2,153 from 649. Those field pages count roles open to students in each major. Postings change quickly, so the posting you apply through is the final word on its own terms.
Engineering internships by discipline#
Use two views for every discipline you care about.
The field page is the wider set: internships open to students in that major, including roles that are not titled with that major. The roles page groups jobs by the work. For mechanical, the roles page lists 968 open roles from 457 companies. For electrical, the roles page lists 1,163 from 486. For civil and structural, the roles page lists 2,224 from 493. For chemical and materials, the roles page lists 583 from 262.
Related majors sit nearby. The computer engineering field page lists 6,366 open internships from 1,708 companies. The industrial engineering field page lists 3,643 from 1,160. The aerospace engineering field page lists 1,297 from 377. The biomedical engineering field page lists 666 from 269. Software-titled work is tracked on the software engineering roles page, which lists 1,670 from 675.
Discipline guides go deeper than this overview:
Computer science internships for software-heavy tracks
Cybersecurity internships for security-focused electrical and computer work
Biomedical engineering is its own field page and is distinct from chemical engineering. Treat those as separate searches.

Terms and timing#
The board-wide summer 2027 term page lists 21,060 open internships. That page covers every field, not only engineering. Defense and aerospace employers often open earlier because clearance and onboarding take months. Consulting firms, smaller industrials, and some public sector teams keep posting later into winter and spring.
Each listing shows its own recommended apply-by window on Intern Insider. That window is not always an employer deadline. In our analysis of when internship postings close, about a third of internship postings are gone before their own stated deadline arrives. The summer 2027 application timeline shows when each wave of employers tends to open.
What postings ask for#
Requirements come from employer postings.
Enrollment. Most engineering listings ask for current enrollment in a bachelor or master program. Some name a class year, such as rising junior. If a listing is silent on class year, read the degree line as written.
Grade point average. Some large programs state 3.0 or similar. Many commercial listings state no number. Small employers often leave GPA off the page.
Tools. SolidWorks, AutoCAD, Revit, MATLAB, Python, Altium, and ANSYS appear often. List tools you have actually used.
Accreditation. Some postings ask for an ABET accredited program. ABET describes accreditation as a review of whether programs meet defined quality standards.
Licensure path. The NCEES Fundamentals of Engineering exam page is the usual first step toward professional engineer licensure in the United States. Many internships do not require it.
Work authorization. Defense and some nuclear roles require citizenship or clearance eligibility. Commercial roles vary. Filter with visa sponsorship when that is your constraint.
How to search without narrowing too early#
Famous employers absorb attention, but seats are spread across hundreds of companies on each field page. A practical approach is to open your field page, add the summer 2027 filter when that is your term, then apply across a wide employer set rather than polishing five applications to household names.
Start with the discipline that matches your major, then check one adjacent field. Mechanical students should also skim industrial and manufacturing roles. Electrical students should skim computer engineering and software roles when the posting invites those majors. Civil students should skim construction and consulting titles. Chemical students should skim materials and process titles, and they should use the dedicated chemical engineering internships guide for that market.
Recheck your field and roles pages on the day you apply. Browse all open internships if you want the unfiltered board.
