Mechanical Engineering Internships Guide

See how many mechanical engineering internships are open, which employers hire, what interns do, and how to apply for summer 2027 internships and co-op terms.

As of 22 October 2026, our mechanical engineering roles page lists 872 open mechanical engineering internships from 407 companies, and 114 of them were added this week.

This guide covers what those roles are called, which employers have them open, what interns are asked to do, and how to find summer 2027 and co-op roles near you. The employer details come from live postings read on 22 October 2026. Postings change quickly, so the posting you apply through is the final word on its own terms.

    Mechanical engineering internships open now#

The 872 open roles come from 407 companies, which averages a little over two roles per company. Counts vary by employer. The roles page shows six Eclipse Automation co-op roles and four Stantec roles, and many employers with a single seat.

Employers with open mechanical engineering roles on the page today include Stantec, Raytheon Technologies, BorgWarner, GITAI, IMEG, Legence, MKS Inc., Eclipse Automation and Alstom. They span building services engineering, defense, automotive, space, automation and rail, so the same job title leads to different work depending on the employer.

    Titles to search for#

Mechanical engineering internships are not always titled "intern." The roles page today includes these titles:

    • Mechanical Engineering Intern, the most common form.

    • Mechanical Engineering Intern / Co-op, which GITAI uses for roles in Torrance, California.

    • Mechanical Design Co-op, which Eclipse Automation uses for roles in Cambridge, Ontario.

    • Mechanical Engineering Student, which J.D. Irving, Limited uses for a role in Saint John, New Brunswick.

    • Mechanical Student Clerk, which IMEG uses for a role in Urbandale, Iowa.

Searching only for "intern" misses the co-op and student titles, and searching only for "co-op" misses the rest. The roles page groups all of them under one field.

    What mechanical engineering interns do#

The work depends on the employer. Six postings read on 22 October 2026 show the range.

Employer and roleLocationWork described in the postingRequirements worth noting
Stantec, Mechanical Engineering Intern - BuildingsHouston, TexasHVAC, plumbing and fire protection design, BIM drawings in Revit, field work at existing sitesThermodynamics and Statics/Dynamics coursework, full-time in summer 2027, no visa sponsorship
Raytheon Technologies, Mechanical Engineer Intern - Test EquipmentTucson, ArizonaDesign of structures, assemblies and mechanisms, drafting to ASME Y14.5, supplier coordinationGD&T experience, Creo, entering at least sophomore year by summer 2027, U.S. citizenship for clearance
BorgWarner, Mechanical Design Engineer Summer InternKokomo, IndianaDesign of inverter and converter systems for hybrid and electric vehicles, thermal and vibration analysis, tolerance stack-upGPA of 3.0 or higher, hands-on project experience, no visa sponsorship
GITAI, Mechanical Engineering Intern / Co-op, Satellite BusTorrance, CaliforniaOne scoped piece of hardware from design through manufacturing and testing, test fixtures, failure investigationExpected graduation in 2027, a year on a student engineering project, 3D CAD, U.S. citizenship
Legence, Mechanical Engineer InternshipNew York, New YorkMechanical design support, field surveys, shop drawing review, HVAC load softwareJunior standing preferred, AutoCAD MEP or Revit, no relocation assistance
Eclipse Automation, Mechanical Design Co-opCambridge, OntarioEngineering calculations, detail drawings and bills of materials, vendor coordinationEnrolled in a program that requires a co-op or work term

Three patterns show up across these postings. Building services employers such as Stantec and Legence ask for Revit or AutoCAD, and the work leans toward design documentation and site visits. Aerospace and defense employers such as Raytheon Technologies and GITAI ask for drawing standards, professional CAD and hardware experience, and both state citizenship requirements. BorgWarner describes analysis and design work on electric vehicle electronics, and Eclipse Automation describes calculations and drawings for automation projects.

Each of these postings is listed as paid. We did not carry any pay figure into this guide, so confirm pay with the employer before you accept. Eclipse describes its student opportunities as post-secondary co-ops and apprenticeships in engineering, skilled trades and technical roles.

Eligibility terms to check before you apply#

The same six postings set different eligibility terms, and several are easy to miss if you skim a title.

    • Year of study. Raytheon Technologies asks for students entering at least their sophomore year by the start of summer 2027. Legence prefers junior standing. GITAI asks for an expected graduation date in 2027.

    • Grades. BorgWarner asks for a GPA of 3.0 or higher on a 4.0 scale. We did not see a GPA minimum in the requirements of the other five postings.

    • Location. Raytheon Technologies describes its Tucson role as strictly on-site, and GITAI describes its role as fully on-site in Torrance. Legence describes its New York role as hybrid, with office days from Monday to Thursday, and states that relocation and housing assistance are not provided.

    • Work authorization. GITAI requires U.S. citizenship because of export-controlled information. Raytheon Technologies requires it to obtain and maintain a U.S. government security clearance. Legence requires current work authorization in the United States.

    • Hours. GITAI describes its role as a paid, part-time internship, and Legence describes its role as full-time. Check the hours before you plan a course load around a role.

    Summer 2027 and co-op timing#

Summer 2027 mechanical engineering internships are already posted, and the roles page shows 114 new postings this week. Deadlines can be close. The Legence posting shows an application deadline of 24 October, and the Raytheon Technologies posting shows 30 November.

Postings do not always stay open until their stated deadline. In our analysis of when internship postings really close, about a third of postings were already gone by the time their own deadline arrived. The summer 2027 application timeline shows when each wave of employers tends to open.

If you study in Canada, many mechanical roles are co-op terms with a work-term requirement, as in the Eclipse Automation posting above. Check your co-op office for its registration steps before you accept a role.

The Canadian roles on the page today are spread across the country. They include Eclipse Automation co-ops in Cambridge, Ontario, J.D. Irving, Limited roles in Saint John, New Brunswick and Dartmouth, Nova Scotia, a Seaspan ULC internship in North Vancouver, a Home Depot Canada mechanical design internship in Toronto, an Alstom mechanical calculation internship in Saint-Bruno, Quebec, and a Votorantim Cimentos North America co-op in Bowmanville, Ontario. Titles vary here too, from "Intern" to "Co-Op Student," so search the field page rather than a single title. Browse the Canadian mechanical engineering roles and the United States roles separately if you are limited to one country.

    Mechanical engineering internships near me#

The roles page has a page for each city with open mechanical roles. Stantec lists mechanical roles in three Texas cities: Houston, Austin and Dallas. The roles page links to more cities, such as Chicago, Denver and Los Angeles.

Licensure and pay for the career#

Licensure does not affect whether you can apply. The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics says mechanical engineers typically need an undergraduate degree in mechanical engineering or mechanical engineering technology, and that licensure is not required for entry-level positions. State licensure generally requires a passing score on the Fundamentals of Engineering exam, which can be taken after an undergraduate degree, and on the Professional Engineering exam, along with relevant work experience, typically at least 4 years. NCEES, which runs the exam, describes the Fundamentals of Engineering exam as generally the first step toward becoming a licensed professional engineer. Licensing rules differ by state, province and country, so confirm them with your own licensing body.

For the career an internship leads to, the BLS reports a median annual wage of $104,110 for mechanical engineers in May 2025. It projects employment to grow 11 percent from 2025 to 2035, with about 17,800 openings a year on average. That figure describes full-time engineers, not interns.

    How to prepare an application#

    • Match the posting. Stantec asks for Thermodynamics and Statics/Dynamics coursework and Revit experience, Raytheon Technologies asks for GD&T experience and Creo, and Eclipse Automation lists hands-on experience with robotics, controls or machine operation as a plus. Put the items a posting names near the top of your resume.

    • Show hands-on work. BorgWarner asks for hands-on experience from clubs, classes or hobbies, and GITAI asks for at least one year on a technically rigorous student engineering project. Describe each project by the decision you made and the result.

    • Check work authorization before you apply. Postings state citizenship, clearance and visa terms, and they differ by employer.

    • Apply to more than one employer. With about two roles per company on average, spreading applications across several employers is more useful than perfecting one.

    • Use the resume guides. Our tech internship resume guide and university internship resume guide cover bullet structure, and the cover letter guide covers the letter. If you are also looking at software roles, see the computer science internships guide.

    Frequently asked questions

No. The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics says licensure is not required for entry-level positions and that a Professional Engineering license can be earned later in a career. The postings we read ask for current enrollment in an engineering program, not a license.
