About the role#
The Industrial Design Intern contributes to the development of current and future generations of the LifeVest. You will join a collaborative team of researchers, human factors specialists, designers, and engineers to brainstorm, ideate, and create models for medical device products. This is a paid, full-time, rolling internship.
What you'll do#
- Create and communicate concepts through sketching, visual storytelling, and physical prototypes.
- Collaborate with cross-functional teams to create drawings and 3D renderings.
- Interview internal and external stakeholders and users.
- Aid in user testing, including creating protocols, running tests, and conducting data analysis.
- Apply future trends in design, technology, and materials to concept ideation.
- Develop user scenarios, use cases, and design requirements.
- Present design work to cross-functional teams for review and feedback.
- Iterate designs based on user feedback, metrics, usability findings, and design critiques.
- Partner with engineering teams and vendors to deliver prototype concepts.
- Create design documentation and execute user research activities.
What you'll need#
- Currently enrolled in or have experience in Industrial Design, Product Design, or an applicable design program.
- Portfolio of 2-3 examples of design work demonstrating the design process.
- Experience generating, sketching, and quickly iterating on novel ideas.
- Experience creating low- and mid-fidelity physical prototypes.
- Experience with a user-centered design methodology.
- Experience determining suitable materials and manufacturing methods for concepts.
- Experience working in a collaborative team and directly with engineers for implementation.
- Proficiency with design drawing software (such as Photoshop or Illustrator), 3D rendering software (Keyshot), and 3D CAD software (SolidWorks or Fusion 360).
- Ability to read and interpret complex technical documents and write technical research reports.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills for presenting to diverse groups of professionals.
- Preferred: Experience exploring styling options (forms, colors, finishes, materials) and foundational understanding of designing plastic injection molded parts.
- Preferred: Experience with various prototyping techniques such as molding, milling, 3D printing, sanding, painting, and filing.
