About the role#
As a Therapeutic Recreation Intern, you will work under the direct supervision of a Certified Therapeutic Recreation Specialist (CTRS). You will gain hands-on experience by planning, implementing, documenting, and evaluating services for older adults in health care, assisted living, and memory support settings. This is an unpaid internship where responsibilities increase based on your skills and university requirements.
What you'll do#
- Observe and participate in group programs and one-to-one interventions.
- Build rapport with residents and manage an assigned long-term care caseload.
- Assist with planning and leading recreational activities, eventually taking on more responsibility with CTRS supervision.
- Participate in resident assessments and documentation, including MDS, UAI, and care plans.
- Attend interdisciplinary team and care plan meetings.
- Use the APIED process to help create monthly recreation calendars.
- Complete short-term and long-term projects, case studies, and special events.
- Attend weekly supervision and team meetings to review performance and program evaluations.
What you'll need#
- Current enrollment in a Therapeutic Recreation, Recreational Therapy, or Activities Professional degree program.
- Ability to meet the specific internship requirements set by your educational institution.
- Proof of flu vaccination.
- A willingness to learn through hands-on training.
- Physical ability to assist residents using wheelchairs or walkers, help residents board buses, and move furniture for activities.
