About the role#
As an Associate System Operator intern, you will work within our Operations Center to gain hands-on experience with electric power systems. You will learn how our team ensures safe and reliable energy delivery by communicating with utilities and using advanced control systems. This is a paid internship for Summer 2027.
What you'll do#
- Learn NERC and PJM certification requirements for transmission operations.
- Monitor transmission and distribution systems using Energy Management Systems and SCADA.
- Support communications with Investor-Owned Utilities, member cooperatives, and staff regarding planned and unplanned outages.
- Assist with equipment monitoring, service restoration, and outage coordination.
- Shadow field technicians and system administrators to observe SCADA/EMS operations and equipment calibration.
- Observe protection relay system operations and help troubleshoot mis-operations.
- Participate in operational planning for storm response and mobile substations.
- Support other Operations Center projects as assigned.
What you'll need#
- Current enrollment in a bachelor’s degree program in engineering or an associate’s or bachelor’s degree in engineering technology at an ABET accredited program.
- A preference for Electrical Engineering or Electrical Engineering Technology majors.
- A genuine interest in energy systems and transmission or substation operations.
- Flexibility to work occasional 12-hour shifts, which may include evenings and weekends.
- Ability to travel occasionally to substations, member sites, and Investor-Owned Utilities.
