About the role#
VU Student Mentors act as guides for high school sophomores and juniors in the VU Mentorship Program. You will help students explore career paths, postsecondary options, and college readiness. Mentors use the PREPP Approach to lead students through structured sessions over the course of an academic year.
What you'll do#
- Complete PREPP Approach mentor training and refresher sessions.
- Build supportive relationships with your assigned mentees.
- Conduct monthly mentoring sessions at partner high schools for one to two hours per student.
- Guide students through the PREPP stages of Plan, Research, Evaluate, Prepare, and Place.
- Help mentees identify their academic, career, and postsecondary goals.
- Keep track of student progress and document your sessions.
- Attend check-ins, feedback sessions, program orientations, and recognition events.
- Represent the university as an ambassador at partner high schools.
- Communicate clearly with program staff and high school contacts.
- Follow university mentoring policies and maintain student confidentiality.
What you'll need#
- Current enrollment at VU in good academic standing.
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
- You must be dependable, organized, and able to commit to the full academic year.
- A genuine interest in leadership, service, education, or community engagement.
- Willingness to travel to local high schools.
