About the role#
The Nurse Extern position provides an opportunity to gain hands-on clinical experience under the supervision of a Registered Nurse or licensed practitioner. You will support direct and indirect patient care activities while working within the VCU Medical Center in Richmond. This is a part-time role for the summer of 2027.
What you'll do#
- Assist patients with activities of daily living, comfort care, and safety support.
- Provide nutritional support and perform selected diagnostic or therapeutic tasks.
- Maintain a clean and safe environment, including sterilization and inventory management.
- Offer emotional support to patients and their families.
- Participate in nursing in-services, patient conferences, and rounds with physicians.
- Engage in problem-solving activities according to hospital and unit policies.
What you'll need#
- Completion of at least the first semester of the junior year in a BSN program.
- For Associate Degree and Diploma students, completion of the first year or at least two semesters of basic nursing courses.
- AHA BLS HCP Certification or equivalent is required for continued employment.
- Ability to lift 20 to 50 pounds and perform physical tasks such as standing, bending, and walking for extended periods.
