About the role#
The Mechanisms & Payload team designs, builds, tests, and operates in-space manufacturing and reentry testbed payloads. As an intern, you will work on a collaborative team to deliver flight electromechanical hardware. You will have the opportunity to apply your skills in programming, mechatronics, structures, fabrication, and testing while working alongside experienced aerospace professionals.
What you'll do#
- Own or contribute to hardware or software design for spacecraft or payload development.
- Create or support test campaigns and build test stands.
- Perform analysis to support development and testing.
- Work on projects such as flight mechanisms, microgravity pharmaceutical manufacturing payloads, hosted payloads, and custom test equipment.
What you'll need#
- Currently pursuing a bachelor's or master’s degree in Materials Science, Mechanical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or a similar field.
- Experience with mechanical CAD, preferably NX.
- Experience designing, building, or operating electromechanical hardware like motors, sensors, linkages, gearboxes, or solenoids.
- Basic programming skills in at least one language, preferably Python.
- Comfort using common hand tools and an interest in learning to use machine tools such as a drill press, lathe, or mill.
- Previous internship, co-op, or technical project team experience is preferred.
Location & details#
- This is a full-time, on-site internship located in El Segundo, California.
- The term runs during the summer of 2027, typically between May and August depending on your university schedule.
- This position is paid and requires candidates to be U.S. persons as defined by export control regulations.
