About the role#
The Department of Recreation at the University of Virginia is hiring Lifeguards to work at the Aquatic and Fitness Center and the North Grounds Recreation Center. This is a part-time student wage position for current UVA students. You will work less than 20 hours per week during the academic semester and up to 40 hours per week during the summer.
What you'll do#
- Supervise swimmers by enforcing pool rules and regulations.
- Perform rescues for people in distress and provide emergency care when necessary.
- Maintain the pool area, including locker rooms, and assist with cleaning and facility upkeep.
- Warn swimmers of hazards and answer patron questions.
- Notify the Aquatic Manager regarding accidents, equipment repairs, or unresolved patron concerns.
- Participate in all staff meetings and in-service training.
- Work a minimum of 2-4 shifts per month, including some opening and closing shifts.
- Work during university breaks, such as Fall Break, Winter Break, Spring Break, and Summer.
- Collaborate effectively within your work team.
What you'll need#
- You must be a current full-time UVA undergraduate or graduate student.
- You must hold a valid Lifeguard and First Aid certification before your first day of work.
- Ability to swim 300 yards continuously using rhythmic breathing.
- Ability to retrieve a 10lb brick from a depth of at least 7ft.
- Ability to tread water for 2 minutes using only your legs.

- Compensation: $14.00 per hour during the academic semester and $16.00 per hour during summer and break periods.
