About the role#
The Civil and Environmental Engineering Department is hiring Federal Work-Study students to assist in our research laboratories. This program provides hands-on experience in structural and environmental engineering settings. You will work alongside faculty and staff to maintain a safe, functional research environment while gaining exposure to specialized equipment. As part of the Internship Placement Program, you will also participate in an asynchronous workshop series to build professional skills.
What you'll do#
- Support ongoing structural and environmental research projects.
- Learn to operate equipment such as DIC, MTS, ICP-MS, and autosamplers.
- Create and update Standard Operating Procedures, operational manuals, and training videos.
- Assist with lab safety checks, signage, and coordination with UVA Environmental Health and Safety.
- Manage inventories for chemicals and research equipment.
- Help set up experiments and maintain lab cleanliness.
- Lead tours of the laboratory spaces.
- Handle logistics like retrieving orders, managing storage, and laundering lab coats.
- Consolidate tools and supplies.
What you'll need#
- Current enrollment as a UVA student.
- Federal work-study eligibility.
- Interest in structural or environmental engineering research.
- Willingness to learn new tasks and take on new opportunities.
- Ability to perform occasional heavy lifting or tasks that may get messy.

- This role is located on-site in Charlottesville, Virginia.
- The position is part-time with hours determined by your supervisor.
- This is a paid internship.
