About the role#
This position supports the partnership between the University of Virginia and the Descendants of Enslaved Communities. You will assist the Descendant Leadership Working Group and the UVA Descendant Researcher in identifying and cultivating relationships with descendants of people enslaved by the university. This role requires Federal Work Study eligibility.
What you'll do#
- Facilitate descendant research and outreach efforts.
- Support programming related to the Memorial to Enslaved Laborers, including scheduling and program coordination.
- Manage and schedule tours of the Memorial to Enslaved Laborers.
- Help the Descendant Researcher curate findings and compile data.
- Handle administrative tasks such as updating website information, producing newsletters, and managing social media.
What you'll need#
- Current enrollment in a BA program.
- A strong interest in history, sociology, or a related field.
- Knowledge of Black history in Charlottesville, Albemarle County, and the surrounding areas, as well as the history of enslavement at UVA.
- Experience with U.S. history research projects and project management.
- Ability to work both independently and as part of a team.
- Strong verbal and written communication skills, including the ability to present to diverse audiences.
- Experience building community partnerships and working with culturally diverse populations.
- Analytical and problem-solving skills to investigate information and draw conclusions.
Location & details#
- Location: 201 W. Main St., Suite 3, Charlottesville, VA.
- Modality: On-site.
- Term: Fall 2026 through Spring 2027 (September 21, 2026, to May 14, 2027).
- Commitment: 10 to 12 hours per week.
- Compensation: Paid position.
