    About the role#

    The University of Virginia is hiring a Born Digital Student Assistant to work in the Albert and Shirley Small Special Collections Library. You will support archivists by identifying and processing digital media stored on legacy formats. This is a part-time position, with up to 10 hours of work per week, available from August 25, 2026, through May 14, 2027.

    What you'll do#

    • Examine and record information about born digital materials like floppy disks, CDs, and DVDs.
    • Locate boxes of materials in the stacks, including retrieving and reshelving items.
    • Search for collections using databases and manual methods to identify digital media.
    • Extract files and run scans on media carriers.
    • Assist with special projects as assigned by the supervising archivist.

    What you'll need#

    • Current enrollment as a student at the University of Virginia.
    • Ability to handle rare and special materials with care.
    • Proficiency in Microsoft Word and Excel.
    • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
    • Interest in legacy digital media formats.
    • Ability to lift 40-pound boxes and climb ladders occasionally.
    • Federal Work-Study status is preferred.
    • Experience in a library or archive, or with database entry, is a plus.

    Location & details#

    • Location: Harrison Small Special Collections building, Charlottesville, Virginia.
    • Modality: On-site work required.
    • Schedule: Monday through Friday, between 9:00 AM and 5:00 PM.
    • Compensation: $16.71 per hour.
    • Requirement: A background check is mandatory for this position.
