About the role#
The Institute for Social Research at Sacramento State is hiring 25 student assistants for the Young Adult Tobacco Purchase Survey Project. This project assesses tobacco sales to individuals under 21 across California. You will work in a team to visit retail locations and attempt to purchase tobacco products while a research partner records the results. This is a part-time, temporary, non-benefited position.
What you'll do#
- Travel to predetermined store locations throughout California by car or plane.
- Conduct tobacco purchase attempts at these sites.
- Communicate your field observations accurately to your research partner.
- Follow all project protocols and instructions from your partner.
- Attend debrief meetings immediately after each trip.
- Keep accurate logs of your travel expenses, hours worked, and purchase results.
What you'll need#
- You must be 18 to 19 years old.
- Ability to travel as a passenger in a rental car or plane to selected destinations.
- Availability for periodic travel on weekends and over school breaks.
- Reliability and dependability for all scheduled travel.
- Ability to follow study protocols as directed by your supervisor.
- While not required, coursework in research methods or related experience is preferred.

- This role is based in Sacramento, California.
- Work is performed in a traveling environment and in an office.
- The schedule is flexible, though most travel occurs on weekends and school breaks.
- This position is paid at a rate of $20.00 to $21.00 per hour.
