About the role#
The California Geological Survey is looking for a Graduate Student Assistant to help build their seismic reflection geometry database. You will support subsurface characterization efforts for California basins while gaining experience in developing, organizing, and delivering GIS products in a professional setting.
What you'll do#
- Create, compile, and maintain spatial and tabular databases from various source materials.
- Use ArcGIS Pro to edit GIS data, perform spatial analysis, and conduct quality control checks for accuracy.
- Manage, publish, and share spatial data, web maps, and GIS layers using ArcGIS Online.
- Convert legacy tabular data, spreadsheets, and maps into structured GIS formats.
- Use Microsoft Excel and Word to organize records and supporting documentation.
- Apply basic Python scripting to streamline routine tasks and improve workflow efficiency.
What you'll need#
- A Bachelor of Science degree in Geology, Earth and Planetary Sciences, Geophysics, or a closely related geoscience field.
- Current enrollment in a graduate degree program (M.S. or Ph.D.) with good academic standing.
- University-level GIS coursework or equivalent project experience.
- Practical experience using ArcGIS Pro for data editing and mapping.
- Familiarity with Microsoft Excel for data organization and analysis.
- Experience publishing web maps or layers via ArcGIS Online.
- Familiarity with basic Python scripting for automation.
- Experience working with legacy data formats like spreadsheets or scanned maps.
Location & details#
- Location: Sacramento, California.
- Work Modality: On-site.
- Schedule: Flexible, Monday to Friday between 8 AM and 5 PM. Generally up to 24 hours per week during the academic year and up to 40 hours during breaks.
- Compensation: $18.27 to $24.04 per hour.
