About the role#
As a Radio Frequency Engineering Intern, you will help design and develop electromagnetic systems for fusion energy projects. You will work alongside engineers and physicists to gain hands-on experience with complex radio frequency projects. This 12-week internship runs during the summer of 2027.
What you'll do#
- Design RF and optical components using tools like COMSOL and ANSYS.
- Use analytical and numerical solutions to improve your understanding of RF performance.
- Provide trade-off estimations using Python or MATLAB.
- Use Vector Network Analyzers to measure the RF performance of components.
- Assess multi-physics interactions, including RF-based heating or plasma absorption characteristics.
- Contribute to design reviews and documentation to verify accuracy and manufacturability.
- Correlate your analysis results with hand calculations, test data, or prototype inspections.
- Collaborate with mechanical, electrical, and systems engineers to support development projects.
- Participate in prototype fabrication, inspection, and testing.
What you'll need#
- Pursuing a bachelor’s or master’s degree in Electrical Engineering or Radio Frequency Engineering.
- A solid understanding of RF design fundamentals.
- Coursework or project experience with EM modelling software such as Ansys, COMSOL, or AWR.
- The ability to critically evaluate simulation results, including mesh convergence and boundary conditions.
- Strong attention to detail and problem-solving skills.
- Experience with Python or MATLAB for scripting and automation.
- Familiarity with Electron Cyclotron Heating (ECH) principles for plasma.
Location & details#
- Location: Madison, Wisconsin.
- Schedule: Full-time, 40 hours per week.
- Term: Summer 2027, starting May 24th.
- Compensation: $25-$30 per hour.
