About the role#
As a Mechanical Engineering Intern, you will contribute to the design and development of mechanical systems for fusion energy projects. You will work alongside engineers and physicists to gain experience in 3D modeling, design documentation, and structural and thermal analysis. This role involves learning about fabrication, assembly, and integration processes in an R&D environment.
What you'll do#
- Create and update 3D CAD models and detailed engineering drawings in Siemens NX.
- Support mechanical design activities including concept generation, layout, and tolerance analysis.
- Assist with mechanical assembly design, tooling design, and part integration.
- Prepare CAD geometry for simulation by performing defeaturing, simplification, and creating mesh-ready geometry.
- Perform structural and mechanical analyses in ANSYS, such as static, modal, buckling, and thermal-structural coupling.
- Run thermal analyses in COMSOL Multiphysics, including conduction, convection, and radiation heat transfer.
- Contribute to design reviews and documentation to ensure accuracy and manufacturability.
- Correlate analysis results with hand calculations, test data, or prototype inspection results.
- Collaborate with engineers across mechanical, electrical, and systems disciplines.
- Participate in prototype fabrication, inspection, and testing.
What you'll need#
- Pursuing a bachelor’s or master’s degree in mechanical engineering or a related discipline.
- Hands-on experience with Siemens NX or similar CAD software for modeling and drafting.
- Understanding of mechanical design fundamentals and GD&T principles.
- Familiarity with manufacturing methods like machining, welding, or assembly.
- Coursework or project experience with finite element analysis using ANSYS.
- Familiarity with COMSOL Multiphysics, or a desire to learn it, for thermal modeling.
- Solid grounding in heat transfer, solid mechanics, and materials.
- Ability to evaluate simulation results, including checking for mesh convergence and boundary conditions.
- Strong attention to detail and problem-solving skills.
- Nice to have: Scripting experience in Python, MATLAB, or APDL to automate simulation runs.
- Nice to have: Experience with ANSYS SpaceClaim or Discovery for geometry preparation.
- Nice to have: Familiarity with the CAD-to-simulation workflow between Siemens NX and ANSYS or COMSOL.
Location & details#
- Location: Knoxville, Tennessee.
- Term: Summer 2027.
- Modality: On-site.
- Employment: Full-time.
