    About the role#

Type One Energy is looking for a Fusion Engineering Summer Intern to support research within our Fuel Cycle and Ceramic Breeder teams. You will investigate how hydrogen and its isotopes interact with materials, using hydrogen and deuterium as surrogates for tritium. This work helps us understand hydrogen transport, retention, and release in fusion fuel-cycle systems. You will work alongside engineers and scientists to gain laboratory experience while supporting experimental and computational projects.

    What you'll do#

    • Plan, prepare, and run laboratory experiments investigating hydrogen and deuterium interactions with materials.
    • Support testing of candidate ceramic breeder materials and other components for fusion fuel-cycle systems.
    • Develop and test hypotheses regarding hydrogen transport, diffusion, and release under various conditions.
    • Gain hands-on experience with laboratory equipment, gas-handling systems, and materials characterization techniques.
    • Collect, process, and analyze experimental data to identify trends and compare results with expected material behavior.
    • Assist in developing computational models and analytical tools to interpret experimental findings.
    • Document procedures and results, communicating progress to the engineering team.
    • Maintain a safe and organized laboratory environment by following established protocols.

    What you'll need#

    • Current enrollment in a bachelor’s program for Materials Science, Mechanical Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Nuclear Engineering, Physics, or a related discipline.
    • A fundamental understanding of materials science, thermodynamics, heat and mass transfer, or related engineering principles.
    • Interest in experimental research, laboratory testing, and hands-on engineering.
    • Experience with data analysis, programming, or engineering calculations through coursework or projects.
    • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with attention to detail.
    • Ability to communicate technical concepts clearly in written and verbal form.
    • Willingness to learn new experimental techniques and tools.
    • Previous laboratory experience is preferred.
    • Familiarity with Python, MATLAB, experimental instrumentation, or data acquisition is a plus.
    • Coursework or projects involving materials characterization, diffusion, or hydrogen technologies are beneficial.

    Location & details#

    • Location: Knoxville, Tennessee
    • Term: Summer 2027
    • Work Modality: On-site
    • Status: Full-time, paid internship
