Internship - Certified Alcohol & Drug Counselor (CADC)

About the role#

This unpaid internship uses a developmental learning approach to build skills in evidence-based practices for supporting individuals in recovery from substance use and mental health disorders. Interns receive close supervision, mentoring, and intensive instruction, gradually gaining autonomy as they progress. The position provides up to 300 hours of experience, capped at 20 hours per week, and includes weekly hour logs, an individualized internship plan, and regular performance evaluations.

What you'll do#

• Provide strengths-based, client-centered, and trauma-informed integrated dual disorder treatment to adults and families with co-occurring diagnoses.
• Manage clinical tasks including intakes, assessments, individual and group therapy, skills building, and case management.
• Develop individualized treatment plans in coordination with clients, their support networks, and medical providers.
• Advocate for clients by assessing their personal, medical, and social needs and linking them to community services.
• Maintain documentation such as progress notes, continue stay reviews, and discharge planning in accordance with Illinois Administrative Rule 2060 and ASAM criteria.
• Collaborate with the care team to ensure quality of treatment and coordination.

What you'll need#

• Current enrollment in a State of Illinois approved CADC certificate program or a Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Social Work, Psychology, or Counseling.
• Must be in good standing with your academic program and meet all specific internship requirements.
