Internship - Certified Recovery Support Specialist

About the role#

This unpaid internship provides a developmental learning environment focused on evidence-based practices for supporting individuals in recovery from substance use and mental health disorders. Interns receive intensive instruction, mentoring, and close supervision, gradually gaining autonomy as they progress. The program includes individualized internship plans, weekly hour logs, and performance evaluations. Interns may complete up to 300 hours total, capped at 30 hours per week.

What you'll do#

• Support clients using motivational interviewing and motivational enhancement techniques.
• Collaborate with clients to develop and implement comprehensive Recovery and Wellness Plans.
• Meet with clients at least weekly to monitor progress and ensure plan implementation.
• Assist clients in accessing internal and external services to meet their needs.
• Link clients to recovery support services consistent with CRSS competencies.
• Engage family members in the recovery planning process.
• Manage, track, and update individual wellness portfolios while maintaining strong documentation.
• Focus on ensuring sustained recovery for clients post-treatment.

What you'll need#

• Current enrollment in a Peer Recovery Support Specialist (CRSS/CPRS) program.
• Eligibility to enter an internship via a school agreement, with completed coursework that validates the internship hours.

Location & details#

• This is an on-site role based in Chicago, Illinois, at either 1400 W Greenleaf Ave. or 8541 S State St.
• The internship term is on a rolling basis.
