Sports Reporter Intern

About the role#

The Philadelphia Inquirer is seeking a Sports Reporter Intern for a 9-week, full-time, paid internship during the summer of 2026. This role is based on-site in Philadelphia and runs from June through August.

What you'll do#

• Report on breaking news, games, and trending sports topics with speed and accuracy.
• Shape coverage that reflects current audience interests and conversations.
• Develop compelling narratives on deadline, identifying storylines that go beyond the headlines.
• Cover a range of topics including daily news, deeper enterprise stories, and national trends.
• Pitch story ideas and angles proactively.
• Collaborate with reporters, editors, and the broader sports team.
• Experiment with various storytelling formats across digital and social platforms.
• Complete a final capstone project summarizing key takeaways and experiences.

What you'll need#

• Current enrollment at an accredited college or university, specifically rising juniors, seniors, recent graduates, or current graduate students.
• Academic background in journalism, communications, or a related field.
• Experience working for a college news outlet; prior professional internship experience is a plus.
• Strong understanding of digital media platforms and audience engagement.
• Commitment to journalistic ethics, accuracy, and attention to detail.
• Ability to work efficiently in a deadline-driven environment.
• Willingness to learn new reporting techniques and tools.
• Strong sense of curiosity regarding sports, culture, and community impact.
• Commitment to contributing to an inclusive and collaborative newsroom.
