About the role#
The Philadelphia Inquirer is seeking a Sports Reporter Intern for a 9-week, full-time, paid internship during the summer of 2026. This role is based on-site in Philadelphia and runs from June through August.
What you'll do#
- Report on breaking news, games, and trending sports topics with speed and accuracy.
- Shape coverage that reflects current audience interests and conversations.
- Develop compelling narratives on deadline, identifying storylines that go beyond the headlines.
- Cover a range of topics including daily news, deeper enterprise stories, and national trends.
- Pitch story ideas and angles proactively.
- Collaborate with reporters, editors, and the broader sports team.
- Experiment with various storytelling formats across digital and social platforms.
- Complete a final capstone project summarizing key takeaways and experiences.
What you'll need#
- Current enrollment at an accredited college or university, specifically rising juniors, seniors, recent graduates, or current graduate students.
- Academic background in journalism, communications, or a related field.
- Experience working for a college news outlet; prior professional internship experience is a plus.
- Strong understanding of digital media platforms and audience engagement.
- Commitment to journalistic ethics, accuracy, and attention to detail.
- Ability to work efficiently in a deadline-driven environment.
- Willingness to learn new reporting techniques and tools.
- Strong sense of curiosity regarding sports, culture, and community impact.
