News Reporter Intern

About the role#

The Philadelphia Inquirer is seeking a News Reporter Intern to support coverage of local, state, and regional government, with a specific focus on politics. This is a 9-week, full-time, paid internship running from June through August 2026.

What you'll do#

• Report on breaking news and developing stories across a wide range of topics, including criminal justice, policy and governance, identity and gender, immigration, gentrification, transportation, and development.
• Write timely, accurate stories and continuously update coverage as events unfold throughout the day.
• Identify and pitch enterprise stories that go beyond daily news coverage.
• Monitor news trends and respond to emerging stories.
• Conduct interviews and gather information from diverse sources.
• Collaborate with reporters, editors, and the broader news team.
• Complete a final capstone project summarizing your experience and key takeaways.

What you'll need#

• Current enrollment at an accredited college or university, with preference for rising juniors, seniors, recent graduates, or current graduate students in journalism, communications, or related fields.
• Experience working for a college news outlet; prior professional internship experience is a plus.
• Strong understanding of digital media platforms and audience engagement.
• Excellent attention to detail, accuracy, and adherence to journalistic ethics.
• Ability to work efficiently under deadlines and a willingness to learn new reporting techniques and tools.
• A strong sense of curiosity regarding sports, culture, and community impact.
• Commitment to contributing to an inclusive and collaborative newsroom environment.
