About the role#
As a Manufacturing Engineer Intern, you will support standardization initiatives for utility, rail, and municipal upfit operations. You will work alongside production associates and operations leadership to build Standard Work Instructions that improve safety, quality, and productivity.
What you'll do#
- Observe manufacturing operations to document current processes, work methods, and installation practices.
- Collaborate with teams to identify best practices and opportunities for standardization.
- Develop detailed, visual Standard Work Instructions for specific builds.
- Establish task sequences that support consistent quality and safe work practices.
- Validate instructions with production teams and revise them based on feedback.
- Apply improvement principles to reduce rework, waste, and labor inefficiencies.
- Create documentation to assist with employee training and faster onboarding.
- Provide project updates and deliver monthly presentations to senior leadership.
- Maintain a portfolio of your project milestones and improvement work.
- Support additional engineering and operational projects as needed.
What you'll need#
- Enrollment in an accredited bachelor's degree program for Manufacturing, Industrial, or Mechanical Engineering.
- Interest in manufacturing operations, process improvement, and operational excellence.
- Ability to observe production processes and translate findings into clear, practical instructions.
- Strong attention to detail and time-management skills.
- Effective written, verbal, and visual communication abilities.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office, specifically Excel, Word, and PowerPoint.
- Ability to work well with production associates and technical professionals.
- Comfort working in both office and active manufacturing environments.
Location & details#
- Location: Bloomington, Minnesota.
- Term: Summer 2027.
- Schedule: Full-time, 40 hours per week, approximately 7:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.
- This is a paid internship.
