About the role#
The Atlantic is seeking early-career journalists for a full-time fellowship program. This role combines daily editorial work with structured learning and mentorship. Fellows embed within specific departments to gain experience in newsroom operations, research, and production. You will work within a cohort and receive guidance from senior staff members. This is a 12-month position designed to build independence and professional competency in magazine journalism.
What you'll do#
- Support editors with fact-checking, research, and transcriptions.
- Assist with production and layout of stories in the content management system.
- Participate in editorial meetings and aid department heads with team operations.
- Evaluate submissions and respond to pitches.
- Identify and produce book excerpts.
- Pitch stories and take on independent research projects.
- Audio fellows will additionally help producers with booking, layout of audio sessions, and shadow-editing.
What you'll need#
- Status as a recent college graduate or early-career journalist.
- Excellent writing, editing, and research skills.
- Strong verbal and written communication.
- Keen editorial judgment and a commitment to accuracy.
- Organizational skills and resourcefulness.
- High level of enthusiasm for collaborative work.
- A genuine belief in the mission of The Atlantic.
- Audio fellows should have experience with audio editing software and skill identifying clips for social media distribution.
Location & details#
- This role is based in Washington, DC.
- The position requires working on-site up to five days a week.
- The schedule may include night, early-morning, and weekend work.
- This is a full-time, paid fellowship for Summer 2027.
