About the role#
As a Mechanical Engineer Intern on the Service Collision Development team, you will specify and design structural repair procedures and parts for Tesla vehicles. You will work with internal teams to develop practical solutions that support collision repair shops worldwide. This role involves balancing high-level design concepts with the technical realities of vehicle repair and manufacturing.
What you'll do#
- Design service parts and develop repair guidelines for cast, extruded, and stamped components.
- Create technical documentation and collision service repair manual procedures.
- Support new model launches by focusing on service part repairability.
- Assist with material and weld testing, including specimen preparation, data collection, and analysis.
- Develop 3D models and detailed CAD drawings for new service parts.
- Provide engineering solutions for field escalations within the collision repair network.
- Contribute to structural analysis and manufacturing feasibility studies.
What you'll need#
- Current enrollment in a Mechanical Engineering, Mechatronics, or related degree program at an ABET accredited institution.
- Proficiency in 3D CAD and 2D drafting using SolidWorks or Catia.
- Strong understanding of Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing (GD&T).
- Experience with mechanical design and technical documentation.
- Ability to research information and solve complex problems under tight constraints.
- Hands-on experience with mechanical systems, machine shop work, or fabrication is preferred.
- Background in automotive, aerospace, or heavy equipment industries is a plus.
- Strong communication skills and a proactive approach to team collaboration.
Location & details#
- Locations: Austin, Texas or Fremont, California.
- Modality: On-site, 40 hours per week.
- Term: Winter 2027 or Summer 2027 (minimum 12 weeks).
- Employment: Paid, full-time internship for students currently enrolled in an academic program.
