About the role#
Tesla is looking for a Mechanical Engineering Intern to design and deploy specialized equipment for vehicle battery products. This role focuses on the development of Li-ion cell components and systems, taking them from initial concept through production launch and ramp. You will work within a team environment to solve challenges related to battery cost and performance.
What you'll do#
- Design and deploy specialized development equipment for battery products.
- Collaborate with engineers across disciplines including CAE, manufacturing, process, test, and design.
- Prepare 3D CAD models, detailed drawings, and manage mechanical BOMs.
- Own basic analyses using FEA, Excel, MATLAB, and scripting.
- Develop and author technical specifications.
- Drive research and experiments to advance internal knowledge of cell design principles, failure modes, and development opportunities.
- Support mechanical builds, proof of principle assemblies, and production machinery.
What you'll need#
- Current pursuit of a degree in Mechanical Engineering or a related field.
- Proficiency in 3D CAD, preferably SolidWorks, CATIA, AutoCAD, or 3DX.
- Strong mechanical aptitude and problem-solving skills.
- Experience with machining, rolling, welding, additive manufacturing, molding, and extrusions.
- Proficiency in Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing (GD&T).
- Experience with MATLAB, Python, CFD packages, structural FEA packages, or statistical analysis tools like JMP or Minitab.
- Demonstrated experience in electromechanical design and analysis of tooling, equipment, and automation.
- Familiarity with international technical standards such as ANSI, NFPA, LOTO, and OSHA.
- Basic knowledge of Lithium-ion battery cell and battery design.
- Experience with test design, setup, data acquisition, and analysis.
- Strong technical communication skills.
- Experience in a manufacturing environment and practical tool skills.
