About the role#
As a Mechanical Engineer Intern, you will focus on the design and deployment of specialized development equipment for battery products. This role involves working within a cross-functional team to drive advancements in battery cost and performance. You will participate in the full lifecycle of cell components and systems from initial concept through production launch.
What you'll do#
- Design and deploy specialized development equipment for battery products.
- Prepare 3D CAD models, detailed drawings, and mechanical bills of materials.
- Develop and author technical specifications.
- Collaborate with cross-functional teams including project managers, controls engineers, manufacturing teams, and technicians.
- Drive research and experiments to advance knowledge of cell design principles and failure modes.
- Support mechanical builds, proof of principle assemblies, and production machinery.
- Troubleshoot new and existing mechanical designs.
What you'll need#
- Currently pursuing a degree in Mechanical Engineering or a related field.
- Proficiency in 3D CAD software such as SolidWorks, CATIA, AutoCAD, or 3DX.
- Proficiency in Python.
- Strong mechanical aptitude and problem-solving skills.
- Experience with machining and fabrication, including rolling, welding, additive manufacturing, molding, and extrusions.
- Proficiency in Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing (GD&T).
- Experience with test design, setup, data acquisition, and analysis.
- Demonstrated experience in electromechanical design and analysis of tooling, equipment, and automation.
- Familiarity with international technical standards for machine design and equipment safety, such as ANSI, NFPA, LOTO, and OSHA.
- Basic knowledge of Lithium-ion battery cell and battery design.
- Experience with tools such as Matlab, CFD packages, structural FEA packages, and statistical analysis software like JMP or Minitab.
- Strong technical communication skills.

- Terms: Winter 2027, Spring 2027, or Summer 2027.
