About the role#
Join the Optimus robotics team to work on the development of humanoid robots. You will collaborate with engineers across mechanical, electrical, and software disciplines to improve robot performance and mass production capabilities. This is a full-time, on-site internship for the Winter and Spring 2027 terms.
What you'll do#
- Develop architecture and controls for per-joint systems.
- Improve simulator computation efficiency for CPU and GPU architectures.
- Convert joint mechanisms into rigid body trees and model kinematic chains.
- Create physics and model representations for joints and limbs.
- Design and support new robotic mechanisms.
- Test reinforcement learning control policies in both simulation and real-world environments.
- Measure and match physical models with simulation data.
- Contribute to the conceptual design of bipedal robots.
What you'll need#
- Currently pursuing a degree in Robotics, Electrical Engineering, Mechatronics, or Computer Science, with a graduation date between May 2027 and December 2027.
- Experience with controls system development, modeling, and implementation.
- Background in linear systems analysis, stability, and controller design.
- Understanding of physics related to electric propulsion, motion control, and heat transfer.
- Knowledge of control systems such as model predictive control, zero momentum control, and motor controls.
- Experience with inverse kinematics, forward dynamics, impedance control, and torque control.
- Fluency in spatial vector arithmetic, Python, C++, and Matlab/Simulink.
- Familiarity with gear reduction mechanisms like planetary, belt, harmonic, and magnetic drives.
- Experience with electric motor design, power electronics, and control circuits.
- Ability to code in a collaborative environment using GitHub.
- Bonus: Proficiency in CAD software such as CATIA, NX, or SolidWorks.
Location & details#
- Location: Palo Alto, California.
- Term: Winter 2027 and Spring 2027.
- Commitment: Full-time (40 hours per week) on-site for a minimum of 12 weeks.
- Compensation: $20.00 to $55.00 per hour plus benefits.
About Tesla
Tesla produces electric vehicles, battery storage systems, and solar energy products. Founded in 2003, the company operates six vertically integrated factories across three continents. It is headquartered in Austin, Texas, and employs over 10,000 people. The organization designs, manufactures, sells, and services its products internally.
How to get in at Tesla
Applying early at Tesla provides a distinct advantage because recruiters review candidates before the applicant pool becomes unmanageable. Intern Insider sends an instant alert the moment a role matching your target is published anywhere, so you apply among the first and get seen before the pile grows. Reaching out to the right people often yields better results than submitting to a general queue. Intern Insider surfaces the recruiters behind the company roles so you can contact them directly to ask about the position or a referral, which materially improves your response rates.
