About the role#
The Residential Energy Engineering team works on energy storage, EV charging, and solar integration for the home. We focus on fundamentals-only engineering to build products that improve residential electrical infrastructure. As an intern, you will join a team of mechanical and electrical engineers to own product design projects from concept through production launch and ramp.
What you'll do#
- Create 3D designs for complex parts and assemblies, including FEA.
- Manage full product design responsibility, including specification definition for dimensions, function, and performance.
- Build hands-on prototypes and improve existing products.
- Release meticulous 2D part and assembly drawings.
- Conduct basic testing and analysis while supporting advanced testing efforts.
- Troubleshoot and root cause test failures or production problems.
- Collaborate across manufacturing, testing, NPI, and supply chain teams.
- Maintain active relationships with suppliers.
- Travel to support production launch and ramp at supplier sites and Tesla factories.
- Develop new technologies through early process development while focusing on cost and complexity reduction.
What you'll need#
- Currently pursuing a degree in Mechanical Engineering or a related field.
- Strong engineering fundamentals in heat transfer, fluids, mechanics, and electronics.
- Basic understanding of electrical design and material science for components like metals, insulators, plastics, connectors, and gaskets.
- Experience with CATIA V5 or V6.
- Working knowledge of Python or Matlab.
- Familiarity with GD&T, finite element analysis, and design for reliability concepts.
- Ability to create products from CAD design to hands-on prototyping.
- Detail-oriented approach with solid documentation and reporting skills.
- Direct machine shop skills or experience with student projects like Formula Vehicle, Solar Car, or Hyperloop are a plus.
- A desire to own your work and manage tight timelines.
Location & details#
- Location: Palo Alto, California.
- Terms: Winter 2027 or Summer 2027.
- Commitment: Full-time (40 hours per week) on-site for a minimum of 12 weeks.
