About the role#
The Electronics Test & Automation team designs and builds the equipment used to manufacture and validate Tesla products. Interns in this role support the life cycle of electronics for vehicles, energy products, and robotics, from early engineering validation through mass production. You will work on-site, full-time, for a minimum of 12 weeks during the Winter or Spring 2027 term.
What you'll do#
- Investigate hardware failures in Powerwall, Megapack, and Supercharger products by tearing down and diagnosing faulty units.
- Design and conduct experiments to replicate failures on power conversion and low voltage PCBAs.
- Develop and execute system-level tests and build experimental setups to validate hypotheses.
- Design electronics for automated test fixtures, including signal conditioning and microcontroller integration.
- Create and interpret schematics, wiring diagrams, and circuit designs.
- Design electrical schematics in ePLAN and develop custom PCBs for new test hardware.
- Write Python applications to execute test sequences, including instrument control, measurement, and data logging.
- Maintain project documentation, including bills of materials, wiring diagrams, and test specifications.
- Support first-article bring-up and verify wiring to ensure tester validation.
What you'll need#
- Currently pursuing a degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, Computer Engineering, or a related field.
- Experience applying Python to hardware and test activities, such as instrument control, limit checking, and test sequence execution.
- Hands-on lab experience using common instruments like oscilloscopes and digital multimeters to debug hardware.
- Familiarity with embedded hardware concepts, including microcontrollers and serial communication protocols like I2C, CAN, SPI, or Ethernet.
- Ability to read, develop, and maintain clear technical documentation.
- Experience with design tools such as Altium, ePlan, KiCad, or OrCAD is a plus.
Location & details#
- Locations: Palo Alto, CA or Fremont, CA.
- Term: Winter 2027 or Spring 2027.
- Modality: On-site, full-time (40 hours per week).
- Compensation: $33.03 - $47.12 per hour, plus benefits.
