About the role#
Tesla is hiring interns for the Cell Engineering team to work on projects related to chemical processing, battery recycling, and lithium refining. You will work alongside engineers and technicians to support operations, design new equipment, and improve manufacturing processes. This is a full-time, on-site internship.
What you'll do#
- Build and maintain mass and energy balance models.
- Design, build, and commission equipment at the mini-pilot or pilot scale.
- Plan and run engineering tests.
- Assist the crystallization team with plant commissioning and start-up.
- Collaborate with refinery process areas and cross-functional teams.
- Develop and deploy new battery recycling processes.
- Support the design of a first-of-a-kind hydrometallurgical plant.
- Perform materials development and process conceptualization.
- Manage day-to-day operations in lab and pilot facilities.
- Optimize production processes and enhance product quality.
- Create systems for operations, training, KPI dashboard visualization, and inventory management.
What you'll need#
- Current enrollment in a degree program for Chemical Engineering, Materials Science, or a related field.
- Understanding of chemistry, thermodynamics, engineering fundamentals, Li-ion batteries, cathode materials, or powder processing.
- Proficiency with engineering tools such as MATLAB, AutoCAD, or Plant 3D.
- Experience with software like ASPEN, Power BI, Tableau, Python, R, TwinCat, SysCAD, or HSC.
- Background in R&D, powder production equipment, or materials development.
- Experience developing mass and energy balance models.
Location & details#
- Locations: Fremont, CA; Palo Alto, CA; Austin, TX; Robstown, TX; Reno, NV; Toronto, ON.
- Terms: Winter 2027 and Summer 2027.
- Commitment: Minimum of 12 weeks, full-time, on-site.
- Compensation: $20.00 - $50.00 per hour plus benefits.
