About the role#
As a System Controls intern, you will work within the Energy Engineering team to develop and implement estimation and control algorithms. You will contribute to projects for both residential and industrial battery energy storage products. This position is full-time and requires on-site work.
What you'll do#
- Support the research and development of advanced optimal control algorithms.
- Create and integrate models while defining new algorithms.
- Write testing code and evaluate how algorithms perform throughout the product life cycle.
- Present your findings to broader engineering teams.
What you'll need#
- Current enrollment in a graduate degree program for engineering, math, physics, or a related field.
- Research experience in optimal control methods such as MPC, LQR, trajectory optimization, or learning-based control.
- Familiarity with linear systems analysis, state estimation, and parameter identification.
- Proficiency in Python or MATLAB/Simulink.
- Ability to communicate and collaborate across different functions.
- Experience with gradient-based optimization, differentiable programming, thermodynamics, heat transfer, electrothermal modeling of lithium-ion cells, or uncertainty quantification is helpful.

- Location: Palo Alto, California.
- Term: Winter 2027 or Summer 2027.
- Duration: Minimum of 12 weeks.
- Schedule: Full-time, 40 hours per week.
- Compensation: Paid internship.
