About the role#
Tesla is seeking an engineering intern to assist with the research and development of electric motors. You will join a team of mechanical, electrical, and electromagnetic engineers to improve the efficiency and performance of electric powertrains for current and future vehicle programs.
What you'll do#
- Improve modeling accuracy for electric motor flux and losses.
- Develop automation applications to generate 2D and 3D stator and winding geometries.
- Convert stator designs into CAD software using automation tools.
- Design and optimize electric powertrain components.
- Create test plans and perform measurements in the dyno lab.
- Innovate new stator winding configurations.
- Build functionality to characterize the electromagnetic performance and manufacturability of stator designs.
- Collaborate with other teams to integrate new stator designs into vehicle programs.
- Design local production tooling and validate it through the prototype building process.
- Coordinate drive unit and material test designs.
What you'll need#
- Current enrollment in a degree program for Mechatronics, Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Systems Modeling, or a related field.
- Graduation date between May 2027 and December 2027.
- Experience with MATLAB, VBA, or equivalent modeling and analysis tools.
- Proficiency with 3D modeling tools like Solidworks.
- Knowledge of electric motor design and applications.
- Experience coding in a collaborative environment using Github.
- Strong mechanical skills, including understanding manufacturing limits, linkages, and design for manufacturing.
- Experience with FEA and ANSYS is preferred.
- FEM simulation fluency is preferred.
Location & details#
- This internship is located on-site in Palo Alto, California.
- The term covers Winter 2027 and Spring 2027.
- This is a full-time, 40-hour per week position.
