About the role#
The Utah Senate is seeking a Minority Policy Intern for the 2027 General Session. This full-time position supports the Senate Democratic Caucus by monitoring legislation and tracking bill progress. You will work directly with the Minority Caucus Administrator to assist with research and prepare materials on policy issues. This role is intended for students or recent graduates with an interest in state government and public service.
What you'll do#
- Monitor legislation and track bill progress throughout the session.
- Update and maintain tracking spreadsheets to keep the caucus informed.
- Assist the Minority Caucus Administrator with research and policy preparation.
- Work independently for long periods to manage assigned tasks.
- Synthesize complex information into clear and concise reports.
What you'll need#
- Current enrollment in or recent completion of a bachelor’s degree program, preferably in Political Science, Public Health, Economics, History, Sociology, or Communications.
- Strong ability to organize, code, and manage data using Google Sheets.
- Excellent research, writing, and analytical skills with a command of grammar and punctuation.
- High attention to detail and accuracy in reporting.
- Ability to maintain confidentiality and professionalism when working with senators and staff.
- Receptiveness to feedback and the ability to act on suggestions.
- Previous experience in policy, communications, or government settings is preferred.
- Familiarity with the Utah Legislature’s policy process and online tracking tools is a plus.
Location & details#
- Location: Capitol Hill, Salt Lake City, Utah.
- Term: Winter 2027 (January 4, 2027, through March 12, 2027).
- Modality: On-site, full-time (40 to 50 hours per week).
- Compensation: $4,100 stipend.
- Requirements: Business professional attire is required. Some evening and weekend work may be necessary.
