About the role#
The Grassroot Institute of Hawaii is seeking a development intern to support its fundraising and development operations. You will work closely with the director of development to gain experience in nonprofit fundraising, donor research, and supporter engagement. This role is designed for individuals interested in learning how a public-policy nonprofit builds relationships, identifies funding opportunities, and develops resources to advance its mission. You will have the opportunity to take on increased responsibility as you contribute to the growth of the organization.
What you'll do#
- Conduct general and detailed donor and prospect research on individuals, foundations, and corporations.
- Assist with prospect identification and help prepare donor briefings, research reports, and profiles.
- Support grant research, grant applications, and donor correspondence.
- Maintain accurate donor records, databases, and development files.
- Assist with donor communications and stewardship, including preparing thank-you letters and invitations.
- Help plan and execute fundraising events, donor meetings, and other activities.
- Assist the finance team with projects involving donations, reporting, and reconciliation.
- Participate in staff calls, leadership team meetings, and development meetings.
- Converse professionally with new contacts on the phone and in person.
- Exercise discretion when handling confidential donor and financial information.
What you'll need#

- Strong research, writing, and analytical skills with the ability to produce clear prose.
- Strong attention to detail and ability to organize information efficiently.
- Ability to communicate professionally and confidently with donors, community leaders, and partners.
- Ability to identify and cultivate sources of information through research and outreach.
- Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to work collaboratively with a small team.
- Good judgment when handling confidential information.
- Proficiency with common office and productivity software.
- Current college students, recent graduates, and graduate students are encouraged to apply.
Location & details#
- This internship is based in Honolulu, Hawaii. The position is primarily on-site, though remote work may be considered for an exceptional candidate.
- This is a paid, full-time internship for the Winter 2027 term.
