About the role#
Simpson Gumpertz & Heger (SGH) is looking for students to join our Chicago office for a full-time summer internship in 2027. You will work alongside experienced engineers to apply your classroom learning to real-world structural engineering projects. This role involves both office work and site visits, which may include working from heights and travel.
What you'll do#
- Assist with construction monitoring, field investigations, condition assessments, and site inspections.
- Support project drafting, structural design, and analysis tasks.
- Analyze materials and assist our petrography staff with testing.
- Develop test protocols, build testing apparatus, perform tests, and analyze the resulting data.
- Collaborate with engineers to perform reconnaissance on existing structures and monitor construction progress.
- Organize field data and conduct research to support problem solving and repair design.
- Perform analysis using hand calculations and software under the guidance of licensed professionals.
- Help prepare client deliverables, including construction documents, specifications, and written reports.
What you'll need#
- Current enrollment in a Civil Engineering or Architecture degree program.
- Strong academic performance.
- A genuine interest in civil or structural engineering, materials science, or architectural engineering.
- Enthusiasm for hands-on learning in a consulting engineering environment.
- Strong communication skills and a professional approach to engineering work.

- Compensation: Paid position with a $1,000 sign-on bonus. Undergraduate rates range from $29.25 to $32.50 per hour, graduate students from $33.75 to $34.75 per hour, and PhD students at $36.75 per hour.
