About the role#
Shirley Contracting Company is hiring Summer Associates for the 2027 season. This program offers field and management exposure across civil, utility, bridge, and structure projects. You will work on projects ranging from $1 million to over $500 million. The role provides opportunities for networking and professional development.
What you'll do#
- Learn the process of acquiring new work by soliciting and evaluating subcontractor bids, performing quantity takeoffs, and scoping bid packages.
- Assist field supervision with schedule planning, management, and tracking daily quantities.
- Support project financial management by administering subcontracts, reviewing payment requests, and managing submittals, RFIs, change orders, and budgets.
- Build positive relationships with customers and co-workers while learning company policies.
What you'll need#
- Enrollment in a relevant field such as Civil Engineering, Environmental Engineering, Business Administration, Operations Management, or Marketing.
- Outstanding communication, organizational, and time-management skills.
- A general understanding of the heavy highway and civil construction industry.
- Proficiency in Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
- Must be at least 18 years of age and authorized to work in the United States on a full-time basis.
- Ability to pass a pre-employment physical and drug screening.
Location & details#
- This is a full-time, paid, on-site internship for Summer 2027.
- Positions are available in Lorton, Strasburg, Fairfax, and Fredericksburg, Virginia.
- The hourly pay range for this role is $18.00 to $23.00, depending on education, experience, skills, and location.
