About the role#
This internship provides experience working with diverse patient populations while developing the professional and interpersonal skills necessary for social work practice. Students will work under the supervision of a licensed social worker and learn through observation, demonstration, and ongoing feedback. Participation requires an existing affiliation agreement between the student's university and Sheppard Pratt.
What you'll do#
- Report to the site 2-3 days per week, between 8am and 4pm.
- Serve patients across child, adolescent, or adult service lines.
- Manage a caseload of 2-4 patients, providing services to support treatment plan goals and discharge planning.
- Complete comprehensive psychosocial assessments.
- Conduct clinical groups 1-2 times per week.
- Meet individually with patients, families, and significant others to monitor and evaluate progress.
- Communicate patient care updates to the treatment team.
What you'll need#
- Must be a 2nd-year or advanced standing MSW student.
- Effective time management and strong oral and written communication skills.
- Ability to work collaboratively within a team while maintaining self-motivation.
- Readiness to engage in self-directed learning, self-reflection, and peer critique.
- Patience and compassion when working with individuals with mental illnesses.
