About the role#
This internship provides an opportunity to work with diverse patient populations while developing the professional and interpersonal skills required for a career in social work. Students will work under the supervision of a licensed social worker and learn through observation, demonstration, and ongoing feedback. Professional growth is supported through self-reflection, self-evaluation, and peer critique.
What you'll do#
- Serve a variety of patient populations on either child and adolescent or adult service lines.
- Provide social work services to an assigned caseload of 2-4 patients, supporting treatment plan goals and discharge planning.
- Complete comprehensive psychosocial assessments.
- Meet individually with patients, families, and significant others to monitor and evaluate progress.
- Conduct clinical groups 1-2 times a week.
- Communicate aspects of patient care to treatment team members.
- Engage in self-directed learning by independently seeking feedback and learning opportunities.
What you'll need#
- Must be a 2nd-year or advanced standing MSW student.
- Effective time management and efficient oral and written communication skills.
- Ability to work collaboratively within a team while remaining self-motivated.
- Patience and compassion when working with individuals with mental illnesses.
- Enrollment in a school with an existing affiliation agreement with Sheppard Pratt.
Location & details#
- Location: Elkridge, Maryland.
- Term: Fall 2026 and Winter 2026.
- Schedule: 2-3 days per week, 8:00 am – 4:00 pm (based on program requirements).
- Modality: On-site.
