Intern, Centre of Excellence (COE) Lab

About the role#

The Centre of Excellence (COE) Welding and Materials Testing Laboratory at Vancouver Shipyards is a CSA-certified and ISO-accredited facility. This role supports mechanical testing activities for welding procedure development and material verification. You will work alongside professional engineers on projects related to the National Shipbuilding Strategy, including the Polar Icebreaker project.

What you'll do#

• Assist in the preparation of various test specimens.
• Support testing activities within the Metallurgical Laboratory.
• Support the COE Lab Quality Management System (LMS).
• Assist in reviewing and organizing work instructions and procedures.
• Assist with audit processes and projects assigned by Welding Engineering and Welding Quality management.

What you'll need#

• Enrollment in the 2nd or 3rd year of a Metallurgical, Materials, Mechanical, Chemical, Civil, or Industrial Engineering program, or a Welding Technology program.
• Good knowledge of mechanical testing methods for materials and weld coupons.
• Familiarity with welding processes and national/international welding codes, rules, and standards.
• Innovative problem-solving skills.
• Strong communication, interpersonal, and organization skills.

• Location: North Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada.
• Term: Fall 2026 (September 8, 2026, to December 18, 2026).
• Work Modality: Full-time, on-site.
• Compensation: Paid at $28.00 per hour.
