Schmidt Sciences invites recent PhD graduates to join a 12-18 month fellowship program within the AI Institute. This role offers early-career researchers a flexible environment to pursue independent research projects while contributing to the development of the Institute. Fellows will split their time roughly equally between their own proposed research and supporting the Institute's broader goals. This is a full-time, paid, on-site position based in New York City.
What you'll do#
- Pursue specific research projects that align with the Institute’s priorities and can be completed within the fellowship term.
- Support the AI Institute by exploring and designing new grantmaking programs.
- Read and assess research proposals across various AI domains, including safety, economics, and scientific discovery.
- Organize workshops and working sessions to build research communities.
- Represent Schmidt Sciences at external conferences and attend gatherings for grantees.
What you'll need#
- A recent PhD in Computer Science, Data Science, Mathematics, Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Physics, Computer Engineering, or Philosophy.
- A strong record of academic accomplishments and publications relevant to the Institute's priorities.
- A high-quality, proposed research project that aligns with AI Institute goals.
- Expertise in areas such as AI agent interoperability, multi-agent systems, AI for scientific discovery, hardware-enabled verification, or the impact of AI on the labor market.

- Location: New York, New York.
- Work Modality: On-site.
- Commitment: 12-18 month fixed term.
- Application Process: Applications are reviewed on a rolling basis.
- Additional Support: Fellows have access to funding for compute/API credits, targeted workshops, and research-related travel.
