About the role#
As a Mechanical Engineer Intern, you will work on the design, development, testing, and optimization of autonomous surface vessels. This role provides hands-on experience applying academic knowledge to projects in the defense technology industry. You will contribute to hardware and software systems while supporting the research and build-related tasks for our maritime platforms.
What you'll do#
- Support the design and development of hardware and software systems for autonomous surface vessels (ASVs).
- Analyze ASV hull forms for stability, hydrodynamics, and structural integrity.
- Participate in the testing and validation of prototypes and autonomy algorithms, including navigation, object detection, and collision avoidance.
- Assist in computational fluid dynamics simulations to evaluate vessel performance.
- Conduct research and implement solutions for sensor integration, data processing, and machine learning applications.
- Contribute to the integration of propulsion systems, control surfaces, and onboard equipment.
- Collaborate with cross-functional teams to troubleshoot and refine prototypes.
- Ensure vessel designs meet mission-specific operational requirements.
- Document progress, prepare reports, and present findings to the team.
- Execute engineering report writing, data acquisition, and data analysis.
- Use hand and power tools, Arduino, and Raspberry PI programming to support build tasks.
What you'll need#
- Current enrollment in a Bachelor's or Master's program in Mechanical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, Mechatronics, Robotics, or a related field.
- Experience with engineering calculations, solid modeling, and drawing.
- Experience with engineering report writing, data acquisition, data analysis, hand and power tools, Arduino, and Raspberry PI programming.
- Preferred coursework in CAD, Machine Element Design, and Solid and Fluid Mechanics.
- Familiarity with design and simulation tools such as Rhino, AutoCAD, and SolidWorks is a plus.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
- Ability to work independently and collaboratively.
- This role requires access to export-controlled information and is limited to U.S. Persons as defined by U.S. law.
Location & details#
- This is a full-time, on-site internship based in Austin, Texas.
- The term runs from May through August 2027.
- This position is paid.
