About the role#
As a Firmware Engineer Co-Op, you will develop software that runs on millions of devices used by industrial and enterprise customers. You will work on battery-powered wireless sensors, Linux-based IoT gateways, and connected dashcams. This role offers exposure to the entire product development lifecycle, from initial concept to final deployment.
What you'll do#
- Collaborate with firmware engineers to design, develop, and maintain embedded software for gateway and sensor products.
- Bring up new hardware platforms by configuring I/O, testing connectivity, and debugging system initialization.
- Work with debugging interfaces including SPI, I2C, UART, CAN, and ADC.
- Implement peripheral drivers, secure bootloaders, device firmware updates, and core management layers.
- Design protocols and implement hardware management to optimize energy consumption for battery-powered devices.
- Work cross-functionally with product, full-stack, and quality teams.
- Participate in customer interviews and collaborate with customer success and product managers.
What you'll need#
- Enrollment in a Bachelor’s degree program in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or a related field.
- Solid C programming skills and familiarity with embedded programming concepts.
- Experience with MCU development environments and tools such as Segger J-Link or GCC.
- Experience working in bare metal and RTOS-based systems like Zephyr or FreeRTOS.
- Experience in one or more core technologies including BLE, GPS, LTE, and CAN.
- Strong problem-solving skills and an analytical mindset.
- Interest in sensors, connectivity protocols, and distributed systems.
- Ability to thrive in an environment that requires rapid deployment and product iteration.
- Any prior projects or coursework related to embedded systems and firmware development.

- Location: San Francisco, California.
- Modality: Hybrid (3 days per week in the office, 2 days remote).
- Status: Full-time, paid co-op position.
