About the role#
The Alterations Academy Intern role at Saks Fifth Avenue provides hands-on experience in garment construction and tailoring. You will work directly with artisans and the Alterations manager to learn professional techniques while supporting the daily operations of the alterations department. This is a full-time, paid, on-site internship based in New York.
What you'll do#
- Assist artisans with both basic and complex garment alterations.
- Prepare garments by opening seams, measuring, and marking.
- Perform stock repairs, spot cleaning, and steaming.
- Observe and assist during garment fittings to learn about tailoring and customer interaction.
- Carry out finishing work, including pressing and quality checks.
- Help track garments through the alterations system to support daily workflow.
- Learn to work with various fabrics and garment types, such as denim, dresses, and evening wear.
- Support special projects by creating patterns and draping for custom orders.
- Complete a final project in partnership with artisans and the Alterations manager to demonstrate your skills.
What you'll need#
- An interest in tailoring and garment construction.
- A willingness to follow company policies and safety procedures when using sewing and pressing equipment.
- A desire to learn leadership skills within a retail environment.
- Enrollment or background in Industrial Design.
