    About the role#

    The Secure and Resilient Systems group is looking for a Formal Methods Research Intern to help specify and verify systems-level software. You will work with computer scientists and cybersecurity professionals on research initiatives focused on establishing cyber and systems security properties. This is a paid, full-time internship for Summer 2027.

    What you'll do#

    • Build specifications and proofs using assistants like Rocq and Lean.
    • Develop tools and capabilities in languages such as Rust and OCaml.
    • Identify machine-checkable properties and apply tools to verify them.
    • Document design decisions and technical progress for management.
    • Collaborate with the team on research, paper reviews, and proposal development.
    • Build technical fluency in formal methods for system security.

    What you'll need#

    • Enrollment in an undergraduate or graduate program in Computer Science, Computer Security, Formal Methods, Automated Reasoning, or a related field.
    • Experience with both functional and imperative programming.
    • Exposure to programming language concepts like type systems, operational semantics, interpreters, and compilers.
    • Familiarity with Linux or Unix-like systems.
    • Experience with version control and software collaboration tools.
    • Ability to work on speculative research projects.
    • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
    • U.S. Citizenship is required for all positions at Riverside Research.
    • Ability to obtain a security clearance if needed.
    • Experience with proof techniques like separation logic, refinement, translation validation, or symbolic execution is helpful.
    • Foundational knowledge of cybersecurity principles such as non-interference.

    Location & details#

    • This position is on-site in either Lexington, Massachusetts, or Beavercreek, Ohio.
    • The internship takes place during Summer 2027.
