About the role#
Radiant is hiring a Nuclear Engineer Intern for Summer 2027 to join our Engineering Research and Development team. You will contribute to the design and analysis of our portable nuclear microreactors, specifically the Kaleidos project. This is a full-time, on-site position based in El Segundo, California.
What you'll do#
- Assist with nuclear design and analysis tasks, including shielding, neutronics, thermal, and fuel-related studies.
- Support coupled neutronics and thermal calculations to refine system performance models.
- Develop lower order shielding analysis models to create rapid shielding design solutions.
- Work on uncertainty propagation methodology and its execution on the Kaleidos Demonstration Unit.
- Perform criticality safety analysis for the Production Plant of Kaleidos reactors.
- Collaborate with cross-functional teams and provide technical input as projects evolve.
- Document your methods, results, and findings in technical reports and presentations.
- Present a final project review to engineers and leadership at the end of the internship.
What you'll need#
- Currently pursuing a BS or MS in Mechanical Engineering, Nuclear Engineering, or a related discipline.
- A strong academic foundation in nuclear engineering principles such as reactor physics, thermal-hydraulics, and radiation shielding.
- Proficiency in at least one programming language like Python, C++, or C#.
- Hands-on experience through coursework, research, projects, or labs in nuclear system design or analysis.
- Familiarity with nuclear simulation codes such as OpenMC, Serpent, MCNP, MOOSE, BISON, RELAP, CFD, Pronghorn, or GRIFFIN.
- Prior software development experience or exposure to version control, testing, and documentation practices.
- Strong communication skills and the ability to work well in a collaborative team.
- Interest in our mission to deploy nuclear microreactors to provide clean energy in remote locations.
Location & details#
- Location: El Segundo, California (100% on-site).
- Term: Summer 2027.
- Compensation: 34 to 40 dollars per hour.
- Status: Full-time internship.
