About the role#
The Linux Systems & Automation Engineering Intern will help build, configure, and automate enterprise Linux infrastructure. You will work with senior engineers on system provisioning, configuration management, monitoring, and operational tooling. This role is designed for students with strong technical fundamentals who want hands-on experience with production systems. It serves as a pipeline for future full-time Systems Engineering or DevOps roles, with potential for extended internships or full-time offers for high-performing individuals.
What you'll do#
- Assist with Linux server provisioning, configuration, and lifecycle management.
- Participate in OS hardening, patching, and baseline configuration development.
- Maintain system documentation, runbooks, and deployment standards.
- Develop and maintain automation scripts using Python or Bash.
- Contribute to configuration management workflows using tools like Ansible, cloud-init, and Terraform.
- Build repeatable deployment templates for bare metal and virtual systems.
- Support monitoring and telemetry systems including Zabbix, Prometheus, Grafana, and OpenSearch.
- Analyze logs and metrics to improve system reliability.
- Participate in incident reviews and root-cause analysis.
- Write internal tools to improve engineering workflows.
- Use Git for version control and contribute via pull requests and code reviews.
- Participate in design discussions and technical reviews with senior engineers.
What you'll need#
- Currently enrolled in a Bachelor’s program in Computer Science, Information Systems, Computer Engineering, or a related field.
- Strong understanding of Linux fundamentals including filesystems, permissions, processes, and networking.
- Experience with scripting or programming in Python, Bash, Ruby, or similar languages.
- Familiarity with Git and basic software development workflows.
- Strong written documentation and communication skills.
- Experience with containers like Docker or orchestration tools like Kubernetes is a plus.
- Familiarity with configuration management tools and exposure to virtualization platforms like VMware or KVM.
- Experience with cloud platforms such as AWS, GCP, or Azure.
- A personal homelab, open-source contributions, or a GitHub portfolio.
